April to June 2010

Hello everyone again!

Hope the hot, muggy weather here in Medford hasn’t gotten to you! As we come to the end of the month of June, none of here in the office can believe it. Let’s recap these past 3 months, shall we?

April

April revolved around the annual tradition of Tuftonia’s Day. In addition to celebrating here on campus (complete with carnival and fireworks!), over 30 other locations around the world celebrated with us! Some celebrations even included parts of the 150 Acts of Citizenship.

Chi Omega, one of three sororites on campus, celebrated their 100th anniversary with a coctail reception on April 10th. Many sisters arrived to campus to visit the house and reminisce!

In addition to these celebrations, the Asian American Alumni Association, in coordination with the Tufts Asian American Alliance on campus, brought fellow alum Cathy Bao Bean, J64, for her talk “Living and Laughing by the Chopsticks-Fork Principle”. A small student/alumni mixer followed the event.

On April 24th, both the Tufts Active Citizens of New York (TACNY) and Tufts Asian American Alumni Association participated in 150 Acts of Citizenship.  TACNY participated in New York Cares to beautify the city. The Tufts Asian American Alumni Association did something similar with Boston Shines in another Tufts host community – Chinatown.

May

May is undoubtly the busiest month for us all – Alumni Weekend (May 20th – May 22nd) proved to be as exciting as ever! In addition to the class reunions on campus (including the new 1 year class reunion for the class of 2009), the Shared Interest Group division was able to host many events that weekend. The Tufts Daily celebrated 30 years with a reception populated by current and past staff. Other groups that had receptions included the Tufts Engineering Alumni, Theta Delta Chi (also known as 123), Tufts Asian American Alumni Association, Tufts Black Alumni Association, Tufts Music Alumni, and  Tufts Institute of the Environment Alumni.

June

From Ballou to Broadway, hosted by Tufts Alumni New York along with the Communications and Media Studies Program and the Department of Dance and Drama, is an event to present the 6th annual P.T. Barnum Awards for Excellence in Entertainment. This year, on June 7th, we honored Oliver Platt, A83, Art Bridgman, A72, and Lisa Lax, A86, & Nancy Stern, A86. With honorary emcees, Hank Azaria, A85 and Joel Bishoff, A83, it certainly was a star-studded Jumbo event!

Tufts Lawyers Association also hosted Tufts Citizen Lawyer of the Year Award ceremony on June 3rd. The recipient, Elliot Lobel, A70, A07P, A11P, AG08P, has been a leader in the Citizen Lawyer Initiative. Tufts Citizen Lawyer, in combination with the Tisch College of Active Citizenship, is one of the initiatives to engage active citizenship with our lawyer population. Please visit the website (linked above) to find out more!

As you can see, plenty is happening, so make sure you keep in touch! Here is an upcoming event:

August 14th – Tufts Gordon Institute Alumni Association will be hosting a family picnic and BBQ at the Tufts campus. Details soon to follow!

March 2010

It’s a busy time of year here at the Alumni Relations Office with graduation and senior events coming up, but we’d just thought we would highlight a few things that happened last month.

Engineering Alumni-Student Networking Night

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Tufts Engineering Alumni-Student Networking Night on Tuesday, March 2, 2010. Our students always enjoy the opportunity to practice their professional networking skills and meeting with alumni to hear about their varied career paths and life after Tufts.

Pen, Paint & Pretzels (3Ps) Centennial Cocktail reception
March 6, 2010 – Alumnae Lounge

100 students and alumni celebrated the centennial of Tufts’ largest theater organization.

Diversity Networking Night
March 9, 2010 – Remis Sculpture Court/Alumnae Lounge

A group of about 50 students of African, Latino, and Asian descent had the opportunity to network with local employers from government agencies, banking, healthcare, medical and academic research, and consulting. Alumni also attended and shared with students their advice about entering the post-Tufts world.

More events and exciting things to come soon!
